The impact of biomechanics on corneal endothelium tissue engineering

چکیده
The integrity of innermost layer the cornea, corneal endothelium, is key to sustaining transparency. Therefore, disease or injury causing loss damage endothelial cell population may threaten vision. Transplantation tissue standard treatment used replace malfunctioning cells. However, this surgery dependent upon donor tissue, which limited in supply. Hence, engineers have attempted construct alternative transplantable tissues therapies alleviate problem. Nevertheless, intrinsic non-dividing nature cells continues foil scientists their attempts yield large numbers laboratory for use such novel therapies. Interestingly, contribution biomechanical properties underlying extracellular matrix (ECM) on division, development and maintenance has been extensively investigated other many types. impact biomechanics behaviour relatively unexplored. Here, we describe contemporary engineering solutions aimed at circumventing scarcity. We review ECM structure features discuss alterations progression point out role developing a tissue-engineered endothelium. highlight main cues, including topographical mechanical features, that cellular behaviors. Finally, influence cues development, how response individual stimuli engineering, implications designing an engineered endothelium maintaining function.

Tissue Engineering of Corneal Endothelium
Human corneal endothelial cells (HCECs) do not replicate after wounding. Therefore, corneal endothelial deficiency can result in irreversible corneal edema. Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) allows selective replacement of the diseased corneal endothelium. However, DSAEK requires a donor cornea and the worldwide shortage of corneas limits its application. This review...

15 صفحه اولThe impact of biomechanics in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
Biomechanical factors profoundly influence the processes of tissue growth, development, maintenance, degeneration, and repair. Regenerative strategies to restore damaged or diseased tissues in vivo and create living tissue replacements in vitro have recently begun to harness advances in understanding of how cells and tissues sense and adapt to their mechanical environment. It is clear that biom...
